Il s\u2019est agi d\u2019instaurer une v\u00e9ritable \u00ab orthop\u00e9die \u00bb, au sens que Nicolas Audry donne \u00e0 ce mot d\u00e8s 1741, soit \u00ab l\u2019art de pr\u00e9venir et de corriger, dans les enfants, les difformit\u00e9s du corps \u00bb. D\u00e9sinvestir les gestes pour mieux investir la voix : pendant pr\u00e8s d\u2019un si\u00e8cle, les techniques de d\u00e9mutisation occupent une place envahissante dans l\u2019emploi du temps de l\u2019\u00e9colier sourd. Cette orthop\u00e9die, que nous avons qualifi\u00e9e \u00ab d\u2019oraliste \u00bb, appliqu\u00e9e dans les Institutions de Paris et de Bordeaux \u00e0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1820, conna\u00eet son apog\u00e9e au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle.<br \/>\nInterroger l\u2019histoire de l\u2019\u00e9ducation des enfants sourds, c\u2019est mettre en \u00e9vidence la farouche volont\u00e9 de notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de faire de la personne sourde une personne entendante. C\u2019est aussi montrer que cette histoire \u00e9pouse celle de la langue des signes fran\u00e7aise (LSF) et sa r\u00e9silience. C\u2019est enfin d\u00e9couvrir qu\u2019au regard de l\u2019histoire du corps du jeune sourd, le sport scolaire silencieux est devenu le porte-drapeau d\u2019une recherche d\u2019une r\u00e9duction du d\u00e9savantage social.
